Back for a hotly demanded third year, Garth’s Auctioneers & Appraisers of Delaware, Ohio is offering a fun night to celebrate The Art of Style, an exclusive preview event leading up to two days of auction excitement: a session of Fine & Vintage Jewelry, Timepieces, Coins and Couture on December 9th, together with A Gentleman’s Auction featuring fine furniture and decorative arts, sporting iconography, luxury accessories, collectible bottles and objets d’art on December 10th.
The December 3rd preview party will be hosted from 5:00pm-8:00pm at Garth’s historic barn in partnership with several of the finest stores in the greater Columbus area. Auction hopefuls will not want to miss this chance to sample wine from Camelot Cellars, wander the Garth’s gallery filled with the auction items, and peruse luxury fashion and artisan leather goods from Bosca Accessories, LEÁL Boutique and The Bespoken Mogul. Just in time for the holidays, the December 9th Jewelry auction will give everyone the chance to find that perfect item for a loved one. An exceptional line-up of fine jewels and more will highlight the afternoon session which begins Wednesday at 2:00pm. All price points are represented with 310+ lots featuring ladies rings, bracelets, necklaces, in gold, silver, platinum and gems; Timepieces by well-known makers and antique Masonic pocket watches; Gold & Silver Coins, both American & foreign; and a selection of Middle Eastern 20k-22k gold items. The highlight of the session is likely to be one of several diamond engagement rings. Lot 1055 is a round brilliant diamond approximately 2.80ct, SI clarity J-K color, flanked by 0.10ct baguette diamonds set in platinum, Sz 8.5 (estimate $ 8,000-12,000), and lot 1061 is a 14K white gold ring with prong set central old mine cut diamond, approximately 3.90ct, I-J color, SI3 clarity, flanked on each side with two round brilliant diamonds approximately 1.00ct tw. Attributed to Irving Schiffman, Pittsburgh, this Sz 8.5 ring is expected to sell for $10,000-15,000.
A choice selection of wristwatches for both men and ladies by makers such as Patek Philippe, Rolex, Franck Muller, Boucheron, Chopard, Ebel, Eterna and more will cross the block. A fine 18K gold Rolex oyster perpetual President watch still retains its original box and tag and is expected to reach $7,000-9,000. A colorful array of Hermes ties & pocket squares, cufflinks by Tiffany & Co, Lucien Piccard, and others, as well as many fine pens by Mont Blanc, Cartier and St. Dupont round out the selections for the gentlemen, while the ladies may choose from matching Escada yellow crocodile handbag and pumps, a Ferragamo scarf, and other purses by Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Judith Leiber, and more.
For the numismatist on your shopping list, how about a one of the two 1 Ounce Proof gold American Eagle coins to be sold? Each in its U.S. Mint box with certificate, choose either the 1986 or 1990 example, each estimated at $1,000-1,200. A ancient Greek gold coin fashioned into a necklace by Richard Tang is in the Etruscan style. Crafted of 22k yellow gold the 2” pendant centers on a square ancient coin depicting Apollo dating from 174 B.C. and is suspended from a 24" chain (estimate $ 3,000-4,000). And, for the seasoned collector, there is a 1839 Gobrecht S$1 J-104 Proof 64 NGC coin. The original 1839 coins were struck in the Philadelphia mint and were limited to 300, all struck with proof finish. It is not known how many restrikes were minted. However, this rare example is one of only 16 total known graded at 64. (estimate $25,000-35,000).
Representing a gentlemanly way of living, the Third Annual A Gentleman’s Auction on December 10th hits on all the areas from cocktail shakers to the perfect leather chair to Guinness and Veuve Cliquot advertising signs, offering something for every den or “man-cave”. Tap your inner designer’s eye and choose from 395+ lots of wine & spirits, furniture, sporting memorabilia (baseball, horse racing, polo, football, bicycles), and additional decorative accessories including items from a Midwestern Fortune 500 company; the Collection of Marguerite R. Shreve; the 50-year Collection of the Late Joyce Specter of Russell, Kansas; a Pennsylvania institution.
Whiskey and wine comprise the first 179 lots beginning at 2:00pm. A partial case of Jas. Hennessy & Co. 3 Star cognac can warm up many winter nights. With eleven 4/5 quart bottles with the original labeling, each wrapped in straw bundle and nestled in the original wood crate, this lot is estimated to reach $2,000-4,000. Seven bottles of Sanderson’s Special Reserve scotch whisky, each probably 1960s, bottled and blended by Wm Sanderson & Son, Ltd. and imported by Park & Tilford (New York) and retaining the original red federal tax strip across cap and Ohio tax stamp on shoulder, will sell for $200-400 each.
Of the wine, the highlights include two lots of Petrus, Pomerol, Grand Vin, each a single 750ml bottle should fetch $2,500-3,500 for the 1982 vintage and $1,100-1,500 for the 1996 vintage. An unopened, 12-bottle crate of Château La Conseillante 1989. Pomerol, will reach $1,800-2,600, while a single bottle of Château Lafite-Rothschild 1982, Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe, should sell for $1,200-1,600. A G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge Brut 1949 Champagne, 1 bottle (1pt, 10oz) is estimated at $350-450. Other vintners from Napa Valley, France, Spain, and beyond with bottles selling include Bonneau du Martray, Château Latour, Château Mouton Rothschild, Opus One, and more.
Of the artwork, you might choose to add to an equestrian themed area with the oil on board titled Polo Match by Larry Dodd Wheeler (American, B. 1942). Depicting "White Birch vs. Rolex, Palm Beach Polo Club", the piece is estimated at $ 1,000-2,000. An America’s Cup print by LeRoy Neiman (American, 1927-2012) is estimated at $400-600. An oil on canvas painting of salmon by William Geddes (United Kingdom, 1841-1884) will be a catch at $1,000-1,500, and a mixed media on paper of the Lackawanna Train Engine by John Wallace Elder (American, 1872-1954) measuring 32” x 64.5” would make a great focal point in a room (estimate $1,800-3,000).
Deck out the den or any other room from the choice furniture including an English tufted leather porter armchair made by Ashley Furniture Workshops, London ($2,000-3,000); An Oscar Onken, Cincinnati carved oak, folding, three-part dressing mirror ($600-900); A leather LearJet armchair ($200-400); a lounge chair and ottoman by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller (estimate $1,500-2,500); or any number of desks, a leather covered library table, and Arts & Crafts bookshelves.
Other items of note include three Western and English saddles, especially a McClelland saddle, ca.1903. with brass fittings and wooden stirrups (estimate $ 150-300); a pair of large cast-iron recumbent whippets (estimate $1,500-2,500); a selection of antique leatherbound books, a selection of taxidermy; large scale models of the ship The Queen Mary (72” l. and estimate $500-1,000) and an exceptionally detailed train model (111.5” l. and estimate $1,000-2,000); a barber’s chair; a Whizzer motorbike; and much more.
Both sessions feature the last of the items to be sold from the estate of the late Dr. Floyd (“Fred”) Loop and Dr. Bernadine P. Healy (Cuyahoga Co. probate case #2015est208166). Loop, the former CEO of the Cleveland Clinic who died in June 2015, and Healy, the cardiologist and academic who headed the National Institutes of Health and the American Red Cross who passed in 2011, were avid collectors. Together, Drs. Loop and Healy amassed an impressive collection of artwork, collectibles, antique and fine furnishings which Garth’s sold in July 2015, but the jewelry, timepieces were saved for this holiday event. Approximately 106 lots of the December 9th Jewelry session and 66 lots from the Gentleman’s Auction are from the Gates Mills, Ohio home the Drs Loop & Healy used to share.
