Ohio Finds! Fascinating Objects from our Past: Troy Sunshade Co. furniture
In 1887, two Troy businessmen began the production of an innovative and patented sunshade for carriages and aptly named their new enterprise the Troy Sunshade Co. The business saw tremendous success as demand for its sunshades grew with the popularity of wheeled transportation of all types. With the advent of the automobile, the company shifted gears to meet the demands of evolving markets, but it retained its name. Additional goods such as hubcaps and windshields complemented the sunshades and sun visors, and the addition of these new product lines opened up opportunities for government contracts during times of war. Company leaders continued to look for emerging markets and opportunities, and as the business’ Defense Department work came to a close, the Troy Sunshade Co. began offering a sleek and modern line of furniture that combined the best of its metal and glass manufacturing with its own time-tested sunshade fabrics.
Although the successful furniture business was sold in 1970, vintage examples of its products can still be found. This art deco armchair and settee still retain their original turquoise blue and leather upholstery. The Troy Sunshade Co. is now known as Bags By Troy and is a leader in the production of cloth promotional materials. Sold at Auction: $650
