HMA & Garth's Partner for Art Auction Fundraiser on October 15
The Huntington Museum of Art will host a fine art auction on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017. The museum is proud again to be partnering with Garth’s Auctioneers & Appraisers of Delaware, Ohio. Garth's CEO and principal auctioneer, Jeff Jeffers, will run the live auction which features nearly 150 works of art supplied by private donors, living artists, as well as a number of galleries doing business with the museum. The funds generated at the auction will continue to support the Museum and its many programs.
"We are very excited to be hosting this fundraiser up at the museum," said Geoffrey K. Fleming, HMA's Executive Director. "The wonderful thing about this auction is that there are artworks including paintings, works on paper, glass and sculpture available starting at every price level, from $25 on up. So, whether you are new to attending an auction or are an experienced collector you can find something to fit your budget."
The auction will feature original works of art by both contemporary, regionalist artists as well as paintings by well-known and important artists of the past. Among the contemporary artists whose work will be included in the sale is the noted cameo glass artist Kelsey Murphy. Other West Virginia artists whose works will be featured include Paula Clendenin, Chuck Ripper, and Susan Petryszak.
Paintings and artworks by historic artists include an abstract bronze sculpture by the Jewish-American artist Seymour Meyer, painted folk cutouts by the Georgia artist Reuben A. Miller, paintings that depict African-American subjects by the Baltimore painter Guinette C. Shure and Ohio artist Valerie Klee Carson. There are also a number of works by artists who worked at the Provincetown Art Colony, including an early oil by Molly Williams Hand, as well as a few works by nationally recognized artists, including Childe Hassam, who is represented by an etching of a farming scene titled “The Hay Barn.”
A highlight of the auction will be two works by the West Virginia painter, Edith Lake Wilkinson, whose works were the subject of an Emmy-nominated documentary which was featured nationally on HBO. Both works – an oil and a woodblock print – depict the fishing village of Provincetown, Massachusetts, where the artist worked during many summers beginning around 1913. The print titled “Back Country, Provincetown” is especially intriguing as there has never been an example offered for sale before.

Auction attendees will be invited to view the works at a reception prior to the auction from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., where they will be able to see close up and in person the works to be offered for sale. Admission to the event is $10 per person, and includes refreshments and a selection of fine hors d'oeuvres.
For those who wish to bid, but cannot remain for the live auction, which begins at 2 p.m., the museum will offer the opportunity to bid by phone as well as to leave bids to be executed by the auctioneer from Garth's. A buyer’s premium of 10% will be added to all successful bids submitted in house.
