Summer Fun Zooms in at Garth’s June Eclectic Auction
On Friday, June 5th, Garth's Auctioneers & Appraisers will host its Eclectic auction featuring over 800 items including: furniture, glass, cars, guns, rugs, pottery, clocks, American Indian artifacts, autographs, postcards, lamps, advertising, and sterling silver, among additional collectibles. This one day sale begins at 9:30am and will offer items from the estates of Jack & Susan Batdorff, Suzanne & the Late Jerry Bentley, Mary & Joe Flegle, Don Horvath, James Warren McLean, Donald & Sally Parrish, Ann Sydnor, and the Lifetime Collection of the Late Jim Weaver of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania along with many others.
For those who have a passion for hearing the vroom vroom of a classic muscle car, the sounds of a 1969 custom Chevrolet El Camino Super Sport should satisfy. The cherry red Malibu series pick-up truck has an 8-cylinder automatic transmission and was awarded “Super Chevy” in the 2005 Super Chevy Magazine. This all American classic is expected to fetch $18,000-22,000. Visit a bygone era with a 1927 Model “T” Ford two door sedan (estimate: $900-1,200). This automobile has a green painted body with high gloss black fenders and running boards, primed gray and red doors and an engine cover. The new rubber tires are mounted on period wooden-spoke frames.
Looking for something that will take your summer get-togethers up a notch? Take a look at the AMI model 1950’s Jukebox. In a wood case with metal trim, a classic turn-table is sure to keep your guests entertained (estimate: $300-600). If you have music covered, the Brunswick-Balke Collender Company pool table, ca. 1900, would provide additional gaming fun. Set in oak with bone diamond accents and leather pockets, this table is accompanied by all the essentials you’ll need and expected to cross the block for $1,500-2,500. To add a little more fun to the party, don’t miss the cigarette machine (estimate $200-400), the slot machine (estimate: $300-600), or the dart machine (estimate: $300-600). Putting some time in at the office this summer as well? An English Chippendale style partners’ desk in mahogany with a tooled black leather top and nine dovetailed drawers on ogee bracket feet has a presale estimate of $250-550.
Advertising signs add a great pop of color and cultural reference to any room. A reverse painted Phoenix Insurance agent’s sign is expected to sell for $300-600. The sign reads "Defiance Agency. Phoenix Insurance Co. Hartford, Conn. J.F. Deatrick, Agent," marked in the lower right corner "W. Berne, Cin., O." A painted sign from Ephrata, Pennsylvania for a covered bridge that crosses the Cocalico Creek at the Cloisters, a German Baptist Communal Society founded in 1732, has a presale estimate of $300-600. Offered together in one lot, a Budweiser and New Bachelor Cigar advertising prints should bring $150-300.
Nothing makes a statement quite like a tall case clock. Fill a space in your home with an American, 1st quarter-19th century birch case clock (estimate:$300-600). The clock has an arched bonnet, free standing pilasters, Hepplewhite feet and a repainted face. A circa 1900 Waterbury Regulator calendar wall clock with a reverse painted lower glass panel will cross the block for $150-300.
Fine glass will be well represented with lots like the six pieces of aquatic blue glass from the Blenko Glass Company, Milton, West Virginia. The five dark blue ornately shaped vases and one dark blue pitcher are expected to fetch $200-400. A pair of ruby swirled trumpet vases with brass ram head mounts and compote should bring $150-275; while an unsigned Steuben Cluthra vase in mottled pink glass has an estimate of $300-500. For pottery lovers, two Floretta vases by Weller, Zanesville, Ohio in high brown under glaze with impressed marks and floral decoration with embossed grapes should cross the block in the $175-350 range. The English Bretby Pottery Aesthetic period ewer with detail that resembles hammered metal with a bird, blossoming tree and heavily enameled medallions should fetch $200-350. One lot of Royal Daulton consists of five character jugs plus four other items and has a presale estimate of $200-400.
Of the silver to sell, a pair of five branch silver plate candelabras dating to the mid-20th century stands 18.5” high with twisted branches and embossed decoration (estimate: $150-300). A set of Kirk Repousse sterling flatware includes utensils, children’s cutlery and seven serving pieces and is expected to sell for $1,000-1,500. Finish your table with a set of twelve Boardman sterling goblets. The simple-urn shaped bowls and tapered stems are likely to push the sale price to $750-1,200.
Firearms start the online session and collectors will find a nice selection of guns including an American, mid-19th century black powder rifle with a tiger maple stock. The unmarked .38 caliber percussion rifle with a double trigger ramrod and patch box has a presale estimate of $350-450. A Springfield rifle with a model 1869 walnut stock and side action shows an American eagle and a shield next to the name “US Springfield,” with the date 1863 appearing on the action plate (estimate: $300-500). A .44 caliber, model 1873 Winchester Rifle with a lever action is marked “Winchester's Repeating Arms, “New Haven, Conn. USA. King's Improvement patent March 29, 1866” (estimate: $250-450).
A well designed rug and great lighting are they way to finish off a room. A Victorian hanging lamp with a cranberry shade will be available for $200-400, while a paneled caramel Slag glass table lamp with a white metal shade should sell for $400-600. An array of room size rugs will be offered throughout the day including a wool rug with a German retail tag on reverse. The rug depicts a cobalt field and floral pattern in rusts, blues, beige and greens (9’.6” x 16’2”, estimate: $650-900). An Oriental wool runner with a red field and floral pattern is a possible bargain at an estimate of $250-500.
Additional items of interest include American Indian artifacts such as a collection of Native American rug patterns and a map. The map features different tribes sample weavings. Both pieces are framed and are expected to bring $200-400. A collection of photographs from the collection of the late Jim Weaver, Some Like it Hot, featuring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Billy Wilder have a presale estimate of $250-375. A Star Wars collection of autographs, also from the Weaver collection, and contained in a 3-ring binder should bring $300-500. A large array of postcards will be available including Halloween, Christmas and several from H.G. Wells, all with estimates in the range of $200-450.
