The Stars Did Shine
On January 31, 2008 Garth's Fine and Vintage Jewelry Auction held the attention of many buyers, both in house and on-line. Of the 371 lots offered in the one day sale, 131 of them were an outstanding collection of bakelite. The remainder of the sale was made up of fine jewelry.
The shinning star of the show was an exceptional Tiffany diamond solitaire ring. Set in platinum with a weight of 4.01 carats, a color of F and graded as internally flawless, this premier stone finally sold for a high bid of $176,562.50. The matching earrings with a combined total weight of 4.06 carats sold several lots later for $67,562.50.
Other fine jewelry included a Queen Anne's Lace brooch with thirty-six full cut diamonds surrounding a 1.89 carat Old European cut diamond which sold for $7,050. A triple strand pearl and diamond bracelet went for $8,225, a pair of Tiffany pear shaped ruby and diamond earrings realized $4,993.75 and a ladies solitaire diamond ring set in 14K gold and a clarity and color of VS/JK brought $4,700.
A pair of diamond and amethyst drop earrings set in 18K gold realized $3,525 and a Tiffany platinum and diamond cross pendant consisting of eleven round brilliant cut diamonds weighing approximately 1.85 carats sold for a high bid of $3,055. An art deco locket with guilloche enamel, white gold and a center old European cut diamond brought $2,232.50.
Watches also did well. A mans Rolex marked Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona wrist watch with stainless steel and gold band realized $5581.25, a ladies Rolex marked Oyster Perpetual Datejust with stainless steel and gold band fetched $2350 and another ladies Rolex oyster wrist watch with two tone jubilee band and white face sold for $2,327.50. A lady's diamond Hamilton wrist watch with arabic numerals, 17 jewel movement and platinum case brought $1,645.
Lots of note among the bakelite included a mixed fruit pin with an orange, apple, peach, banana and strawberry suspended from a branch. This adorable vintage pin easily exceeded its presale estimate of $500-750, eventually selling for $1,347.50. A “Superstition” charm necklace with five charms on a metal chain brought $1,175, a yellow swordfish pin with green overdye and glass eye sold for $1,163.75, a swing neck giraffe pin realized $1,116.25 and a yellow hand pin with painted nails and crossed fingers fetched $1,057.50.
