NAVAJO HORSE RACE BY FRANK TENNEY JOHNSON (CALIFORNIA, 1874-1939). TOP LOT OF THE SALE - $196,250
The cover lot of the catalog featured young braves racing horses through the desert by California artist, Frank Tenney Johnson(1874-1939 ). The excitement on the faces of the braves in the painting were reflected in the mood of bidders competing for this painting as it opened the Saturday morning sessions. Selling to a phone bidder speaking with Vice-President and Auctioneer Amelia Jeffers, the hammer price was an outstanding $196,250. Research is still in progress but that price likely makes it among the top 30 paintings sold at auction by the artist. Titled Navajo Horse Race  on the stretcher, the 26 ½” x 32 ½” oil on canvas was signed and dated 1927 in the lower left. The painting was consigned by a longtime collector from Detroit, Michigan who inherited it from his grandfather.
