Garth’s April Eclectic Auction Sparkles

Close on the heels of a highly successful Early American and Decorative Arts auction at the end of March, Garth’s Auctions of Delaware Ohio welcomed a standing-room-only crowd to its April 3rd Eclectic Auction proving customers are ready and willing to spend money, contrary to headlines touting weak consumer confidence.

The top lot of the auction, a traditional platinum and diamond engagement ring with an Old European cut center stone of 2.95 carats, brought an impressive $12,925 to a buyer in the room, despite heated bidding from the phone and internet. Shortly after, another platinum and diamond ring, also with an Old European cut stone, sold for $2,115.

Dolls offered bidders  another buying opportunity, with several examples adorned with bisque heads and original clothing. A Bru Jne #5in original green dress, red stockings, leather shoes and red knit hat charmed buyers to a high bid of $9,988. A large K*R Simon & Halbig boy doll sold for $764, a wax over composition Sonnenberg Taufling with bamboo teeth fetched $558, and a K*R baby with a bent knee composition body brought $441.

Those participants interested in textiles were presented with a vibrant display as the well-done, brightly colored quilts were hung throughout the gallery. A Civil War era stuffed work quilt with flowers and baskets crossed the block for $1,410, a pieced sampler quilt fetched $764, a white on white bride’s quilt sold for $558, a Drunkard’s Path quilt in blue and white steadily made its way to $529, and a quilt made of a variety of Civil War era dress prints brought $499.

Among the many other items of interest in the auction was a Chicago Mosaic leaded glass table lamp.  In a flowering water lily and cattail motif on a tree trunk base, the lamp lit up the room when it sold for $3,643. A Fenton Mosaic art glass vase in a threaded urn form crossed the block for $1,469, a large jeweler’s regulator clock signed “M. Dolph & Co.” kept time with a high bid of $1,645, and an oil on canvas coastal seascape by New York artist Granville Perkins (1830-1895) brought $1,058.
